Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.


Course Description and Target Audience

This presentation will focus on the mental health challenges and strengths of diverse women and girls, with an introduction to feminist therapy and multicultural feminist therapy principles and practices. The presentation will also address advocacy as a professional competency and help participants consider ways in which they may wish to or already do advocate for clients and members of marginalized communities. Participants will engage in individual reflection as well as small and large group work.

The material presented is sourced from contemporary texts, peer-reviewed journals, and publications from the American Psychological Association. The material is designed to help participants broaden their understanding of the girls and women with whom they are engaged professionally and provide additional ways of thinking and therapeutic tools with which to work with their clients. The presentation is limited to introduction and brief work with the material, but participants are provided with resources should they wish to learn more. There are no known risks.

This presentation increases awareness and knowledge of contemporary mental and physical health issues for diverse girls and women. The program introduces feminist therapy and multicultural feminist therapy approaches and guides participants to consider how these approaches may complement to their current clinical work. The program also introduces contemporary theory and research on advocacy competency development for psychologists and guides them to consider the relevance of advocacy in their work and identities.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to describe unique mental health challenges for women and girls.
  • Participants will be able to describe and apply feminist therapy and multicultural feminist therapy principles to current clinical work.
  • Participants will be able to discuss the multidimensional nature of advocacy and ways of advocating as a psychologist.


Presenter Information

Dr. Penelope Asay is a Board Certified Counseling Psychologist who earned her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is an Associate Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Dr. Asay’s research and teaching interests include multicultural and diversity issues, social justice and advocacy, training and supervision, and career issues for women. An alumna of the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology, Dr. Asay he has held a number of professional leadership roles and has consulted and trained in a variety of academic and clinical spaces in the areas of diversity, leadership, career development, and group dynamics. Dr. Asay serves as the Director of DEI Operations for the National Psychology Training Consortium.

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.


A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain CE’s. Your CE certificate will be made available to you upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
