Instructional Level

Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

Course Description and Target Audience

This presentation will review the impact of tobacco use on behavioral health consumers, detailing prevalence rates among this vulnerable population and how behavioral health treatment is negatively affected. Best practices for tobacco use and dependence treatment will be shared, including a review of treatment strategies and recommendations. FDA-approved pharmacological approaches will also be described. Participants will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge through sample case studies.

Treatment interventions will be recommended based on the most update-to-date Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence as well as the 2020 Surgeon General's report on Smoking Cessation. Participants may utilize the information and tools presented when working with tobacco-dependent patients. There is minimal risk to the patient, but in particular, contraindications and precautions will be noted when discussing FDA-approved medications.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to discuss the prevalence and trends of tobacco use among adults in the U.S.
  • Participants will be able to describe the epidemiology and impact of tobacco use among behavioral health consumers.
  • Participants will review evidence-based tobacco treatment strategies and recommendations based on the U.S. Public Health Services Clinical Practice Guideline on Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence.
  • Participants will be able to list cognitive and behavioral treatment strategies to assist tobacco users throughout their quit attempt
  • Participants will be able to identify and describe current FDA-approved pharmacological approaches for the treatment of tobacco/nicotine dependence.


Presenter Information

Kayla Hsu is the Community Outreach Manager for Rethink Tobacco Indiana, a statewide grant initiative aimed at facilitating health systems change for tobacco treatment in behavioral health settings. Kayla supports these treatment centers by providing technical assistance to integrate evidence-based strategies to improve the delivery of comprehensive tobacco treatment services. She is a trained Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) and a certified-UMass TTS trainer with experience in planning and delivering TTS trainings around Indiana. Kayla is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) and has earned the National Certificate in Tobacco Treatment Practice (NCTTP).

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.


A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain CE’s. Your CE certificate will be made available to you upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
