Instructional Level

Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning-level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

Course Description and Target Audience

This presentation will provide an overview of suicide and suicide risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs. Attendees will also learn about suicide statistics across ages and ethnicities and become aware of factors that influence suicide across populations. We will explore theories of suicide (e.g., why do people think about and/or attempt suicide?) and the implications of these theories. We will then discuss how to assess suicide risk and will review the Safety Planning Intervention by Stanley and Brown. Attendees will also practice using the Safety Planning Intervention. We will end with reviewing longer-term treatments for suicide. Target audience: Mental Health Professionals who work with any clients or patients.

The Safety Planning Intervention is an evidence-based tool for use with individuals experiencing suicidality. All mental health professionals should be competent in working with clients who experience suicidality. All content in this presentation is derived from research and/or clinical experience. There are several evidence-based tools that exist to treat suicidality. The Safety Planning Intervention was selected for this presentation as I find it to be the most user friendly and helpful in my own work. I also review suicide statistics, but these are frequently changing, and it is possible there is additional literature on the topic of suicide that I missed. Risks may include attendee discomfort in discussing suicide.

I review suicide across ethnicities, ages, and TGNC individuals. I also review considerations for using the SPI in different populations.
