Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

Course Description and Target Audience

Sleep disturbance is a common symptom concern for many patient who present in primary care. Although behavioral intervention is first-line treatment for primary insomnia, it may not always be the treatment offered by many primary care clinicians. This session will focus on exploring the prevalence, diagnostics, and treatment of insomnia and general disturbed sleep in a primary care setting. The evidenced based treatment for insomnia, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-i), will be explored as well as Brief Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia (BBTI). Case examples will be utilized to illustrate clinical application of the treatment models explored.

Mental health professionals working in an interdisciplinary medical setting treating patients with disturbed sleep. BBTI and CBTi are evidenced based protocols for the treatment of insomnia. BBTI and CBTi have been created and implemented within an ethnic majority population. Other models will be briefly introduced that have been found to be efficacious for BIPOC individuals. There are no known risks to this presentation.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to differentiate between normal and abnormal sleep structure.
  • Participants will be able to explain the utility and benefits of BBTI and CBT-i, while differentiating between appropriate and inappropriate use of the strategy.
  • Participants will be able to implement the various components of CBT-i (beyond sleep hygiene) and BBTI into clinical practice.


Presenter Information

Dr. Carlie Nikel is an Associate Program Director and Director of Behavioral Science at the University of Missouri – Kansas City Family Medicine Residency. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine at UMKC SOM. Dr. Nikel earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Forest Institute in Springfield Missouri in 2014. She focused her clinical training, internship, and fellowship in integrated health psychology prior to joining the faculty in 2016. In addition to program development and education of residents and faculty on behavioral science, Dr. Nikel also supervises doctoral psychology practicum students, and facilitates a pre-doctoral internship and post-doctoral fellowship in integrated behavioral health. As a licensed clinical psychologist, she provides integrated behavioral health services at the University Health Lakewood Medical Center, which is home to the UMKC FMR.

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.
