Instructional Level

Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

Course Description and Target Audience

The presentation will review the historical, cultural, and social contexts that may be relevant when working with individuals of Filipino and/or Vietnamese descent. Participants will learn information that may enhance their cultural competence in working with this population.

The information being presented will include both anecdotal experience and peer-reviewed research in the areas of culturally competent/sensitive evaluation and intervention with individuals with Filipino and Vietnamese descent. Limitations may include the relative paucity of research with these specific populations, which represents the broader purpose of this presentation, which is to raise the awareness to the relative lack of representation and support for these populations within the context of research and academia as well as health care, in general.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will demonstrate an understanding of cultural history that affects the mental health of the Asian community, particularly people of Vietnamese and Filipino descent. Participants will be able to draw on this historical knowledge when working with members of the Asian community.
  • Participants will be able to identify values, beliefs and world views that someone from the Asian community might have when seeking psychological services. Participants will exhibit an enhanced awareness of how these may differ from their own.
  • Participants will be able to identify an enhanced awareness of their own world views, values and beliefs. Participants will demonstrate how those factors might impact their work with people who identify as Asian.
  • Participants will analyze barriers that Asians face when dealing with mental health and how these might impact psychological intervention.
  • Participants will identify effective and culturally sensitive interventions to provide effective treatment to the Asian community.
