Instructional Level
Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.

Course Description and Target Audience

While the integration of behavioral health within primary care has been implemented, focus has mostly been on brief interventions, as well as consulting and training providers.  Although efforts have undoubtedly been made in establishing brief assessment/screening measures for common mental health and substance abuse concerns, as well as functionality measures, formalizing testing has yet to be converted to the primary care setting.  This presentation will discuss brief assessment measures utilized in primary care (e.g., PHQ-9, DUKE-Health profile, AUDIT, etc.), as well as begin to discuss how more traditional testing may be scaled to the primary care setting for certain functional/quality life needs of patients.

Brief screening tools have long been utilized in the primary care setting and have been validated as being accurate and useful. There will also be training and discussion about the utility of other more traditional psychological and neuropsychological testing in this setting and what the risk or limitations this may cause.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify brief assessment measures for commonly seen mental and behavioral health concerns.
  • Participants will be able to describe potential conditions/evaluations that formal psychological testing may be useful.
  • Participants will be able to conceptualize how formal testing evaluations may scale to brief medical clinics.
  • Participants will be able to identify neurological symptoms that can be mistaken for psychiatric conditions.
