Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.


Course Description and Target Audience

Identify factors essential to assessing pain. Distinguish chronic, acute and medically unexplained pain. Discuss evidence-based treatments for pain. Introduce interdisciplinary approaches to pain treatment.

This presentation will identify factors essential to assessing pain. Distinguish chronic, acute, and medically unexplained pain. Discuss evidence-based treatments for pain. It will also introduce interdisciplinary approaches to pain treatment. This presentation reviews multimethod and multi-informant strategies for assessing pain, discusses evidence-based interventions for the treatment of chronic, acute, recurrent, and somatic pain and explores is informed by credible journal articles and books written by leaders in the field of pediatric pain psychology. A variety of approaches and perspectives are approached in the exploration of biopsychosocial components of pain presentation. 

Materials are accurate and useful to the best of my knowledge. Tailoring to diverse populations may be limited. I am focusing exclusively on pediatric presentations. There are no known risks to this presentation.

Presenter Information

Dr. Ellens is the associate program director of the pediatric psychology fellowship at Hurley Medical Center and an assistant professor at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. Her clinical responsibilities include work with children and families across multiple medical settings inlcuding Hurley Children's Hospital, pediatric primary care, pediatric craniofacial clinic, pediatric pulmonary clinic and health psychology therapy services. Dr. Ellens also serves on the Michigan Psychological Associations Programming Committee and her hospital's IRB and Ethics Committees.

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.


A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain CE’s. Your CE certificate will be made available to you upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
