Instructional Level

Intermediate — Builds upon the learner’s foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

Course Description and Target Audience

Participants will learn the tricks of the trade in regard to primary care behavioral health. Specifically, participants will learn the philosophy of primary care and how PCBH aims to help achieve that philosophy. Further, attendees will learn how to structure initial and follow up visits with PCBH. Lastly, attendees will learn techniques to increase the overall level of integration at their clinics.

The target audience is mental health providers (advanced doctoral level psychology trainees, psychologists in practice, master’s level clinicians etc). There are no known risks to this presentation.

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will be able to describe the philosophy of primary care through the four C’s of primary care.
  • Attendees will be able to describe the GATHER philosophy of Primary Care Behavioral Health and how it helps achieve the goals of primary care.
  • Attendees will be able to articulate the structure of an initial PCBH visit.
  • Attendees will be able to articulate the structure of a follow-up visit in PCBH.
  • Attendees will be able to apply techniques to enhance the level of integration at their clinics.

Presenter Information

David Bauman, PsyD, is the Behavioral Health Education Director at Central Washington Family Medicine, where he also serves on the residency faculty and as a behavioral health consultant. He completed formal training in the Primary Care Behavioral Health model and in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy during his pre and post-doctoral experiences. Dr. Bauman has presented at a number of national conferences and authored book chapters on working with behavioral concerns in primary care. He currently serves on the leadership team of the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association’s PCBH Special Interest Group. He has experience in training medical providers and residents, as well as behavioral health consultants, regarding the integration of behavioral health care and implementation of ACT (and other behavioral approaches) within primary care and other medical settings.

Bridget Beachy, Psy.D., a licensed psychologist, is currently the Director of Behavioral Health at Community Health of Central Washington (CHCW) and leads a team of seven Behavioral Health Consultants (BHCs). She is also a behavioral health faculty member at CHCW’s Central Washington Family Medicine Residency and has duties working as a BHC. Dr. Beachy also completed her pre-doctoral training at HealthPoint, a federally qualified health center which is known for its robust Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) program developed by Jeff Reiter. Dr. Beachy has experience in training medical residents, medical students, and BHCs in PCBH as well as in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Additionally, she has co-authored two book chapters addressing behavioral health in medical settings and has given multiple presentations on integrated care both locally and nationally.

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.

A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain the CE’s. The CE certificate will be emailed to participants upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
