Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Course Description and Target Audience
This presentation provides an overview of the empirical support, basic theoretical framework, and detailed description and experiential practice for each of the 6 primary change agents of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. The presentation begins with an overview of the mental health, medical, and life experiences for which ACT has been shown efficacious through research. The presentation then goes on to describe the overall goal of act, being psychological flexibility, and to describe the perspective that act takes on what creates psychopathology and how one can achieve the ultimate goal of psychological flexibility by "showing up", "letting go", and "getting moving".
Participants will also learn what the "hexaflex" is in ACT and will understand and experience each of the 6 components of the hexaflex: Contact with the present moment, Self as Context, Acceptance, Defusion, Values, and Committed Action. We will end the presentation with an exercise in case conceptualization and treatment planning using the Choice Point method in ACT. Target audience: Psychology interns who work with children, teens, and adults under the supervision of licensed Psychologists.
The material presented as part of this topic is based on research about ACT, it's efficacy and mechanisms of action. This topic has high utility as it is an approach that is highly integrative of many existing empirically supported approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy, behavioral therapy, mindfulness based therapy, and solution focused therapy approaches. This is an introductory topic and presentation and will be best learned over time with supervision from licensed practitioners. There are no obvious foreseen risks associated with the training and/or materials.
Diversity will be incorporated into the presentation as we discuss various disabilities and client challenges including discrimination, socioeconomic status, and gender equity.
