Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.

Course Description and Target Audience

The course will focus on the current demographics of limited English proficiency individuals in the United States and will then discuss the importance of using qualified interpreters when working with the individuals. The presentation will then express current research based guidelines that should be used when working with language interpreters in a clinical setting. The presentation will discuss both sign language interpreters and foreign language interpreters. Target audience: Mental health professionals who work with individuals who do not speak the professional's language and require interpretation to receive appropriate services.

The materials are accurate since they have been derived from peer reviewed articles and reputable organizations. The material demonstrates great utility since the majority of clinicians will need to work with an interpreter at some point in their career. There are multiple methods researched related to interpretation, some of which conflict with each other, and many of them are present in this presentation. No risks known.

The population that requires interpretation is inherently underserved and will be discussed in this presentation. Additionally, there are many cultural factors that impact the best use of interpretation services and these will also be discussed.

Learning Objectives

• Participants will be able to identify the current demographic information for limited English proficiency individuals in the United States.
• Participants will be able to arrange a therapy/assessment room appropriately for the use of an interpreter.
• Participants will be able to list the 4 stages of working clinically with an interpreter.
• Participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate understanding of the major guidelines for working with a language interpreter.

Presenter Information

Dr. Aimee Dershowitz is a licensed psychologist currently in private practice in Zionsville, Indiana. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Indianapolis with concentrations in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Health Psychology. She began her practice in community mental health working with a rural north central Indiana population. She enjoys working with underserved individuals.

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

• Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
• Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.

A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain CE’s. Your CE certificate will be made available to you upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
