Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Course Description and Target Audience
This presentation will be an introduction into the psychological and medical world of gender affirming care. It will cover basics of gender health, including basic terminology, identity development, gender dysphoria, and types of gender transition. Information about Tanner Stages and the effects of gender affirming hormone treatments on the body will be discussed. It will include information about what qualifies as gender affirming care, how the requirements for gender affirming medical treatment vary state-by-state, and how to provide a psychosocial evaluation and write a letter of support for a patient seeking gender affirming care, if appropriate.
Additionally, the psychosocial impact of the sociopolitical climate and restrictive legislation will be reviewed and resources for patients/clients and families of patients/clients in the LGBTQ+ community will be provided. This presentation will provide ample opportunity for attendees to ask questions in a safe space so they can really understand the transgender and gender diverse community and their needs of a psychology provider. Target audience: Mental health professionals who work with any age group, especially those who will specifically work with transgender and gender diverse patients.
Materials presented all come from evidence-based sources and direct professional experience. Presenter is not TGD and cannot speak to personal gender affirming care experience, only to direct professional experiences, education, and trainings. Nature of the topic is sensitive, but no risks are foreseen.
The premise of the presentation is all based in diversity and inclusion, specifically in how to be an affirming provider and promote health equity.
