Instructional Level
Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.


Course Description and Target Audience
This course will discuss the basics of addiction and substance use disorders and review the treatment modalities used for SUD. We will discuss how to provide evidence-based treatment in an outpatient setting.

The target audience is mental health providers (advanced doctoral level psychology trainees, psychologists in practice, master’s level clinicians, etc).

There are no known risks to this presentation.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify evidence-based treatment modalities for substance use disorders (SUD).
  • Participants will be able to identify types of mutual help groups, describe how they work, and their role in SUD treatment.
  • Participants will be able to explain the use of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT), identify different types, application, and their role in SUD treatment.
  • Participants will be able to discuss and demonstrate effective clinical skills to address SUD in an outpatient therapy setting.


Presenter Information

Tristen Winston, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist in CA, KS, MO, a Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist in KS, and working towards Board Certification in Addiction Psychology. She specializes in Substance Use and trauma treatment. Dr. Winston is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Missouri, Kansas, and California and a Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor (LCAC) in Kansas. Dr. Winston specializes in military behavioral health, Gottman Method couples therapy, addiction medicine, and trauma. Dr. Winston earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theater from the University of Southern California, went on to earn a Master of Arts Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Executive Coaching from The University of the Rockies, and completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. 

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.


A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain CE’s. Your CE certificate will be made available to you upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
