Instructional Level

Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.


Course Description and Target Audience

This didactic training will provide an overview of Dialectical Behavior Therapy, modules of skills group, individual psychotherapy, and consultation teams as it may be applied for the treatment of individuals experiencing emotion dysregulation, chronic suicidality and/or risk behaviors. The presenter will discuss basic assumptions of DBT, the Biosocial Theory, dialectics, and mindfulness. Therapist use of self-reflectivity, nonjudgemental stance, validation, and risk assessment will be highlighted through case presentations and discussion.

Materials presented follow DBT Skills Training Manuals of Linehan and Miller for adults and adolescents, respectively.

Presenter Information

Dr. Karen Shipley, a licensed clinical psychologist with 30 years of experience in the behavioral health field, is dedicated to raising awareness, connection, and compassion for those who receive services and those who provide services through a relational, informed approach and a sense of adventure. She divides her time between clinical practice, teaching, training and consulting across the U.S. 

An experienced DBT therapist and team lead of the DBT Columbia Program, Dr. Shipley has a private practice, Drishti Consulting & Psychotherapy Services, in Columbia, Missouri, where she provides therapy services for adolescents and adults. Also, Dr. Shipley is a part-time Clinical Consultant for Burrell Behavioral Health in Missouri and Arkansas, an Adjunct Faculty member of Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California, and the Director of Diversity Enhancement for the National Psychology Training Consortium in Springfield, Missouri. She specializes in the treatment of pervasive emotion dysregulation, chronic suicidality, self-harm and risk behaviors, eating disorders, trauma, and grief and loss. Dr. Shipley offers an authentic and open style to invite ongoing growth amongst individuals, groups, programs, and agencies.

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.


A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes video links, materials, and tests required to obtain CE’s. Your CE certificate will be made available to you upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on exam).
