Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Course Description and Target Audience
The CBT Model for the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders, Treatment Interfering Behaviors, and Treatment Refusal covers how to address 2 common anxiety disorders and treatment, across a range of treatment engagement levels. The presentation begins with an overview of the anxiety and related disorder and the CBT model for conceptualizing anxiety. Panic Disorder treatment is described and resources are provided to support psychoeducation. Social Anxiety Disorder treatment is also described, highlighting the patient's learning through exposure practice. The second half of the presentation discusses one approach to reducing Treatment-Interfering Behaviors with patients and helping families improve their well-being when the identified patient is refusing treatment. Target audience: Mental health professionals who work with clients with anxiety disorders with a range of treatment-engagement behaviors, as well as their families.
CBTs for panic and social anxiety disorder are well-researched. Treatment Readiness Therapy and Family Well-Being Approach to treating treatment-interfering behaviors and families of treatment refusers are supported by 2 small pilot studies. These approaches may best be described as research informed, as each of the individual strategies (i.e., Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Activation, and family therapy approaches) have a solid research foundation. There is limited research support for the Treatment Readiness Therapy and Family Well-Being Approach to treating treatment interfering behaviors and families of treatment refusers. (The component parts may have been investigated, but not the package of treatments, beyond small pilot studies.) There are no known risks associated with this training.
