Instructional Level

Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.

Course Description and Target Audience

This presentation will provide a rich understanding of the Behavioral Scientist role in Family Medicine residency programs, beginning with a brief overview of the history of the role and medical training requirements. It will then take a deep dive into patient-centered communication as a critical skill required of medical providers and how cultural humility and health equity concepts can and should be woven throughout training elements. Participants will be engaged through hands-on practice utilizing an observation tool, role-playing feedback, and sharing there own experiences as educators with medical teams.

Best for behavioral health trainees and professionals who work in medical settings will likely find the most use in this program. However, concepts also apply to general supervision and patient care. Presentation will draw from the most current available literature/research on this topic. Attendees will be provided with an instructional observation tool and research evidence to back up it's use.

The presentation will offer a brief overview of the Behavioral Scientist role and then focus predominately on training and assessing a subset of skills. It will not provide an exhaustive review of what Behavioral Scientists do. Evidence presented is limited by what has been published. As with any topic, it's important to acknowledge the exclusion of null results in publications. There are no known risks of this presentation.
