Course Description and Target Audience
The presentation will outline research support for the Rorschach Inkblot Technique and describe it's strengths and weaknesses. I will review basic scoring principles, key data points for interpretation, and strategies for addressing diagnosis and treatment planning. I will provide students with an introduction to integrative report writing using the Rorschach Performance Assessment System (RPAS).
RPAS was based on a meta-analysis published in 2011. It only retained items from the Comprehensive System that demonstrated strong research support. The Rorschach is one of the most accurate and widely used instruments for diagnosing psychotic thought disorders and personality disorders. The test also provides valid data regarding emotional management, cognitive resources, self-image, and interpersonal functioning.
The target audience is mental health providers (advanced doctoral level psychology trainees, psychologists in practice, master’s level clinicians, etc).
The risks associated with the Rorschach Inkblot Technique are minimal. It can promote regressive symptoms in severely disturbed clients. It is a performance based test, and if the client is not engaged in the process, data could be limited. However, even with difficult and resistant clients, the Rorschach Inkblot Techniques can provide a window into their psychological functioning that is otherwise is unavailable
