Course Description and Target Audience

This day long workshop will provide each individual with the understanding of SBIRT and how to perform a brief intervention. The interactive workshop will require participants to engage in discussion, practice and application of core content. Provider Training: SBIRT for Healthcare Professionals-The goal of this training is to prepare a healthcare professional to provide SBIRT services. This includes skill development for each of the phases of the SBIRT process: Screening, Brief Interventions and Referral to Treatment. This 8-hour training is highly interactive and includes clinical practice to improve fidelity for the SBIRT process. Target audiences is mental health professionals who may discuss alcohol and substance use risks with their clients and potentially address behavior change in these areas.

Information provided is aligned with evidence-based practice, endorsed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and is informed by updated literature. Materials are based on primary care settings; it will be less utilized by individuals in alternative settings. SBIRT requires implementation by organizations and therefore the information presented may be limited in the applicability within organizations that are not implementing SBIRT. The risks include potential personal objection or conflicts with our own belief about how to define risk and discomfort if this includes their own level of risk being higher than previously believed.

We will include discussions of diversity throughout all of the practice and screening application.
