Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Course Description and Target Audience
This presentation will focus on diagnostic criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other specified feeding and eating disorders. We will discuss best practices for conducting eating disorders assessments. We will review specific techniques and guidelines for assessing common eating disorder behaviors and cognitions and how these relate to DSM 5 diagnoses. Target audience: Mental health trainees.
Information in this presentation is drawn from the DSM5, validated assessments for eating disorders, and peer-reviewed research. Limitations, which will be discussed in this presentation, are that assessment and diagnosis for EDs has been validated using primarily White affluent female samples, which limits generalizability to other groups and has resulted in decreased identification of EDs in minoritized populations. No risks noted.
We will discuss considerations of eating disorder assessment in underdiagnosed and undertreated populations including racial and ethnic minority groups, men, LGBT populations, and people with food insecurity.
