Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning-level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.
Course Description and Target Audience
This training will explore the connection between attachment and grief. It will distinguish between depression and grief and how grief may present differently in different cultures. Acute, prolonged/complicated and ambiguous grief will be defined and differentiated. The conditions that contribute to acute grief, prolonged/complicated grief and ambiguous grief will be identified. The utility of four theoretical models of grief will be introduced. Participants will be provided with resources to use in their own practice. In addition, participants will be provided opportunities to become familiar with their own explanations of grief and how they conceptualize and cope with grief. Grief and Related Interventions is designed for Mental Health Professionals who are interested in understanding the intricacies of grief in order to work more effectively with their populations who are affected by loss.
Information provided in this training is based on current and historical evidence from peer reviewed journals, leading grief experts' theoretical conceptualization of grief, conversations with religious leaders, antidotal experience with grieving clients, and current research. Participants will be provided tools that are currently being used by Columbia University and partner institutions in research on Complicated Grief. Participants will not receive hands on opportunities to practice putting the theories into practice in the training period. They will be provided experience to explore their own perspectives and relate them to those they serve. The information from the Columbia University Complicated Grief project was named "Complicated Grief" prior to the DSM 5 TR labeling this type of grief "Prolonged Grief." Individuals will be exposed to a difficult topic that affects all humans. It is important for participants to recognize if and when they may need to care for themselves during the training.
Presentation of grief is explored in the context of various cultures, across genders, and different regions of the world.
