Instructional Level

Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.

Course Description and Target Audience

This presentation provides an introduction to legal terminology and concepts (including malpractice) which are relevant to the practice of clinical supervision. In addition, six ethical issues found in the literature are discussed to orient novice supervisors to these areas of concern that they are likely to encounter in their clinical supervision practice. Nine types of unethical behavior are discussed; supervisors need to monitor for these behaviors in their supervisees and their own clinical work.

The materials presented are believed to be an accurate cross section of the available literature pertaining to legal and ethical issues which a doctorial level clinical supervisor is likely to encounter in their clinical supervision process.

Note that many changes in mental health supervision and practice have occurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The current research lacks an understanding of the impact of telehealth and remote work on supervision.

In addition, this presentation does not exhaustively address ethical or legal issues. This presenter is also not a lawyer and recommends that supervisors seek legal advice as appropriate.
