Instructional Level

Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.

Course Description and Target Audience

In the past few years, it has become more mainstream to offer supervision services online, increasing students' access to diverse training opportunities and making supervision more flexible and accessible. However, supervisors must be adequately trained in providing supervision through this method. In addition to the convenience and benefits, tele-supervision comes with challenges and limitations. This course provides you with skills and knowledge to provide tele-supervision to your supervisees.

Mental health professionals who provide supervision to students or pre-licensed providers. Please see the bibliography for citations. Research has found that tele-supervision has comparable out comes to in-person as far as training efficacy as long as the supervisor is adequately trained in this method of teaching. There are added challenges with tele-supervision, which are addressed in the presentation and include technical issues, fewer informal check-ins, and multitasking in supervision sessions. Again, citations are in the bibliography. I do not know of any risks associated with this particular training.

Just as tele-supervision increases students' access to more diverse training opportunities, supervisors who use this method of teaching must have appropriate competency to support more diverse trainees and their more diverse client bases. This is addressed in the course.
