Instructional Level

Advanced --- Builds upon established experience, knowledge and skills in the content area. This may include more diverse applications to specific populations or a novel application of the skill presented. Advanced level programming tends to be more specialized in nature, and allows the learner to integrate and enhance knowledge and skills into their practice or other professional domains.

Course Description and Target Audience

The presentation begins with an examination of the political polarization of the voters in the United States of America and the accuracy of such assumptions. Then, we transition into a discussion of relevant ethical standards and how they can be applied to working with clients who differ from their clinician's belief system. After reviewing the ethical standards, we discuss the effects of misinformation and disinformation on clinical concerns. From here, we move into examining how personality may influence ideology and relevant clinical concerns. Finally, we end with some practical considerations for clinicians. Throughout the presentation, there are opportunities for small group discussion, case study examples, and larger group discussion. Target audience: Mental health professionals who may work with clients who hold drastically different worldviews and political beliefs than they do.

All research is cited directly from the source. Any graphs included are cited for reference. Potential limitations: 1. Political psychology and clinical psychology have largely been separated and there is limited research on how to integrate them 2. The sources themselves are limited in terms of their racial and ethnic background. Potential risks: 1. Some individuals may be offended by the material. 2. One of the case studies refers to conversion therapy. That may be a source of distress for some clinicians.

The subject material requires an engagement with diverse perspectives. There is discussion regarding how clinicians may respond when encountering bigotry and prejudice from their clients. There is also an emphasis on the integration of politics into clinical work as being clinically indicated when working with marginalized individuals.
