Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Course Description and Target Audience
Cannabis use across the country has greatly increased with the legalization of medical and recreational use in most states. Understanding the legal and political climate and the varied impact on local policies related to cannabis use are crucial to engage patients in conversations about their cannabis use. In this ever changing social landscape, psychologists need to address the impact of cannabis use with patients in all clinical practice settings. Therefore it is vital for clinicians to have up to date knowledge about cannabis use and to screen all patients for use and assess risk of addiction. Target audience: Psychology students, interns, early career providers.
Dr Winston is Board Certified in Addiction Psychology and has practiced in the field of addiction medicine since 2012. This presentation has been well researched through peer reviewed articles and relevant governmental agencies. This is an introduction to cannabis and cannabis use disorder. A general overview of diagnosis and treatment in an outpatient setting will be covered, but this presentation is not an exhaustive or detailed training for the treatment of cannabis or other substance use disorder. This presentation is limited to the adult population and does not address or discuss adolescent use. As with any presentation that includes a sensitive and/or controversial topic, there is a slight risk that participants could be triggered. Presenter will inform participants about the potential risks at the start of the presentation. Presenter will ensure the presentation is focused on combatting the stigma of substance use and mental health issues to increase the clinical competency of all participants.
This presentation will address diversity in that substance use disorders do not discriminate and impact across all demographics. An emphasis on access to care and low barriers to treatment will be included.
