Introductory — Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and
perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.

Course Description and Target Audience

This workshop introduces participants to Focused Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. After a brief introduction, participants will experiment with measurement of psychological flexibility, FACT assessment tools, and FACT conceptualization tools. The workshop includes discussion of self-care strategies during the pandemic and use of FACT interventions, including “Creating: The Web of Life” and “The Quality of Life Matrix.”

The target audience is mental health providers (advanced doctoral level psychology trainees, psychologists in practice, master’s level clinicians etc).

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to define experiential avoidance and psychological flexibility.
  • Participants will be able to explain how to use the AAQ-2.
  • Participants will be able to complete a brief assessment using the Contextual Interview Questions.
  • Participants will be able to explain how to use the FACT Four Square Tool to conceptualize and intervene.
  • Participants will be able to describe the Pillars Intervention Guide.
  • Participants will be able to list ways that the FACT approach can benefit complex patients. Use 2 FACT interventions based on metaphors.

Presenter Information

Patricia J. Robinson, PhD, has explored integrated care from the perspective of a clinician, researcher, trainer, and health care consultant for the past twenty years. She is the Co-founder of fACT. Current activities include providing consultation services to health care systems that are (1) integrating behavioral health services into primary care, (2) seeking to improve treatment of chronic pain, chronic disease and care to children, women, and/or the elderly, and / or (3) attempting to increase use of brief evidence based cognitive behavioral therapies in primary care and other medical settings. She is an author of five books, including Behavioral Consultation and Primary Care: A Guide to Integrating Services (with Jeffrey T. Reiter) (Springer, 2007), The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Depression (with Kirk Strosahl) (New Harbinger, 2008), and Real Behavior Change in Primary Care: Strategies and Tools for Improving Patient Outcomes and Increasing Job Satisfaction (New Harbinger, 2011), as well as numerous other articles and book chapters.

Kirk D. Strosahl, PhD, is cofounder of focused acceptance and commitment therapy (fACT), a cognitive behavioral approach that has gained widespread adoption in the mental health and substance-abuse communities. He is coauthor of Brief Interventions for Radical Change and In This Moment. Strosahl provides training and consultation services for Mountainview Consulting Group, Inc. He is a pioneer in the movement to bring behavioral health services into primary care. He resides in Portland, OR.

Video Homestudy Format

CE’s for this homestudy training will be earned through completing the following tasks:

  • Watch the presentation video and review all provided documents in their entirety.
  • Pass the post-test questionnaire with at least 80% correct.

A program evaluation form will be provided to all who registered following the training. Please be sure to complete this form since your feedback helps direct future CE programming from our organization.

Registration Cost

This cost includes videos, materials, and tests required to obtain the CE’s. The CE certificate will be emailed to participants upon successful completion of the training (80% or higher on the exam).
