Introductory --- Designed for psychologists who may have little to no background in a specialized skill or content area. The learner can become acquainted with the theoretical underpinnings, principles, methods, and perspectives of a content area. Although it can be used as a foundation for more advanced learning, a program may simply focus on breadth, enrichment or general knowledge.
Course Description and Target Audience
This presentation focuses on the multiple definitions of rural in the country. It will address barriers that individuals face in seeking mental health in rural settings. The presentation discusses common factors associated with individuals in rural settings. It addresses how interns can approach these individuals in a mental health setting. It also discusses benefits to working within a rural setting. For mental health professionals who work within rural settings or with individuals who reside in rural settings.
The accuracy of this information is based on government data and peer reviewed articles. My experience is based in the Midwest USA. No risks identified. Rural Americans are a diverse population. Intersectionality will also be addressed in the presentation.

- Participants will be able to identify the different definitions of rural in the USA.
- Participants will be able to recognize their own personal biases related to rural culture.
- Participants will be able to recognize the barriers associated with practicing/obtaining care in a rural setting.
- Participants will be able to identify common factors in individuals who are from rural settings.
Presenter Information
Dr. Aimee Dershowitz is a licensed psychologist currently in private practice in Zionsville, Indiana. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Indianapolis with concentrations in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Health Psychology. She completed her internship in rural Arkansas, her postdoc in rural Indiana, and worked with clients for 8 additional years in rural Indiana.
