Intermediate --- Builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications.
Course Description and Target Audience
This course reviews the current research around telemental health, including therapy treatment as well as assessment. It also reviews current APA and other ethical standards for telehealth. It reviews US law around providing telehealth. Safety and practical considerations are covered. Finally, we will discuss providing supervision via telehealth. Target audience: Mental health professionals who provide telehealth or tele-supervision.
Telehealth has a wide research base at this time demonstrating its efficacy as long as the providers have adequate training. Please see the bibliography for this presentation for details. Telehealth requires a unique clinical skill set, and providers must have appropriate knowledge and training before providing this method of service. There are unique safety considerations with telehealth, which are discussed int his presentation.
Because telehealth increases the geographic area from which we draw our clients, providers must be especially mindful of cultural considerations. This is discussed in the presentation.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to analyze the legal and ethical considerations of telehealth as a method of providing mental health services to clients.
- Participants will be able to evaluate existing research on telehealth to assess efficacy and employ evidence-based interventions.
- Participants will be able to develop tele-supervision practices based on current research, legal, and ethical requirements.
- Participants will be able to design an arsenal of telehealth interventions for use in practice with clients from a variety of backgrounds and with various presenting concerns.
Presenter Information
Dr. Amy Marschall is a licensed psychologist in seven states, PsyPact provider, and registered clinical psychologist in New Zealand. She is a certified telemental health provider and expert in neurodiversity-affirming care. She is also an author and speaker.
